SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS CAN UNDERTAKE A SCHOOL BASED TRAINEESHIP OR APPRENTICESHIP WHICH WILL CONTRIBUTE TOWARDS THE HSC!
WHAT DOES IT INVOLVE?
School Based Traineeships and Apprenticeships are a combination of:
- Paid part – time work in a particular vocation (on the job training)
- Structured formal training (off the job) in the relevant vocational area which is credited towards the HSC ( Vocational Education and Training – VET course)
- HSC study over Years 11 & 12.
The VET course component of the School Based Traineeship or Apprenticeship contributes 4 – 8 units towards the HSC depending on the course, and is taught by a Registered Training Organisation (RTO) – either TAFE, Department of Education and Communities, or a private training provider.
The ‘on the job’ paid work component of School Based Traineeships and Apprenticeships require a minimum of 100 days with an employer in the chosen vocation (130 days – Automotive, 144 days – Construction, 180 days – Plumbing and Electrotechnology) over the period to 31 December of the HSC year.
School Based Traineeships and Apprenticeships may commence during Year 10 and up to the beginning of Year 11. School Based Traineeships completeby 31 December of the HSC year.
School Based Apprenticeships complete the equivalent of the first year of the apprenticeship part-time during the school component, and convert to full-time work and training post HSC, for the term of the apprenticeship.
School Based Traineeships and Apprenticeships include nationally recognised qualifications (Australian Qualifications Framework – AQF) at Certificate II, III or IV level.
